Can you change your plans slightly? 18 Years, 2 Months ago
Is your itinerary already set? If not, you should consider starting from the east side, outside of Lander, WY at the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie trail head. The elevation is quite high (around 8000+) and the lakes there have lot of nice brookies in 'em. I was there a couple of years ago and had a blast. Good fishing, plenty of solitude and absolutely beautiful.

I have to second Buzz's plug of Mitchell's book, I have a copy and it is an invaluable source of info on The Winds. Easy to get on Amazon.

A great range of mountains that I barely got to explore. I will be back.
Have great trip.

USED TO smoke dope. Now I have asthma. HEAR THAT KIDS? Smoking can give you lung disease.

However, kids, when you grow up and are of legal age, try port. It's a really fine wine that many of the British dudes who brought us fly fishing used to drink. You might say it's a part of our fly fishing history.

And kiddies, "Guest" is right. What he's actually saying is you should be civil to people, even if you don't like them, and treat them with respect.

I really respect you, Guest, for being so concerned about the youth of America. I'm sure I can speak for many on this board and encourage you to be the infighting and anti-swearing police. You can never have enough monitors.

A steelhead fly fisherman needs two qualities:
A strong casting arm and a room temperature IQ.

You de man, FlyGuy! 18 Years, 2 Months ago
I called my buddy, who's organizing our expedition, and we ARE starting at Lander. When I went up a couple of years ago with another group, we rode horseback out of Pinedale (man, after 6 hours I was just a ball of pain!) and I assumed we were going to hike out of the same locale.

Nope. We're taking the mandatory $500.00 10 mile truck ride out of Crowheart with a native gal, across the Shoshone Res, to a trailhead. (Can you say "scalping"?)

We'll target brookies in the lower elevation lakes, cuts in the streams and goldens in a couple of higher lakes. There's also a lake containing "splake", which I think is a lake trout and brookie hybrid, although I'm not certain.

Thanks for the input. I'm gonna try to post photos of this one...unless I get skunked.
